THE WOMAN CAME TO SEE HIM

(Matthew 26:6-7)

The woman came to see Him.

In her hands she held an alabaster flask filled with very valuable ointment. So valuable in fact, that she could have made a lot of money for herself had she chosen to sell it…but something within her knew she was not meant to profit monetarily from her possession. Somehow she knew she was meant to share it for a much greater purpose.

The owner of the house was named Simon (a leper) and as the woman stepped foot into his home she immediately focused her attention on the man reclined at the table. There were other men in the house, many in fact, but the woman took little notice of them as she walked towards their master without saying a word.

She looked at the man with hopeful eyes and was not disappointed at what she saw.

This is Jesus, she most undoubtedly thought. And though we do not know her motives by her words, she does reveal her heart for this man Jesus, as she takes her most valuable possession and uses it to anoint His head. No man will ever know the blessed weight of this moment between the woman and Jesus, and especially what it meant to her.

Did time stop for her in that moment? Did she feel His power surge through the tips of her fingers and into the flesh of her hands? Did her excitement cause her breath to catch in her lungs and only release when her service was done? Did she realize the true importance of what she was doing or would it hit her later at home as she rehashed this moment over and over in her mind?

There are just some things we are not meant to know.

What we can do though is keep hope and trust that we can have the same kind of encounter with Jesus.

Yes, I know, we’re probably not going to be physically anointing His head with oil like this woman in Scripture did anytime soon…but that doesn’t mean we can’t share incredible moments with God.

Moments that stop time for us. Moments where we feel God’s power in our lives, like the vibration of a tuning fork pulsing deep from within our chest. Moments that catch our breath and make us realize that God is real and loves us unconditionally.

These moments can be experienced by the flame of our faith (whether that flame be small or large) and our willingness to be brave enough to seek out Jesus no matter the cost, and no matter what the world thinks.

We can all take inspiration from the woman with her oil, who bravely sought out Jesus, regardless of the cost…and shared a moment that’s still talked about today.

Will you be brave enough to seek God and experience Him in this intimate way? Will I?

As with most things in life, the choice is up to us. Just never forget that the opportunity is there.
