The light was dim in her room as she allowed her eyes to adjust to the darkness around her. She bit at the fingernails on her right hand as she thought nervously of her future. While she was excited to marry Joseph, a good man, she sometimes wondered if she would a good wife…a wife he deserved.
She had her own mother to look to for inspiration…but there in the twilight of her room she felt the thick embrace of doubt. She had confidence that God would bless her marriage, and that she and Joseph would serve Him daily. But she couldn’t help but worry…and wonder what kind of woman she would become…would she be someone her parents would be proud of? Someone her future husband would brag about in conversations with his friends? Someone her future children would model themselves after?
She bit harder at her nails as she thought about these things…her future…and what she would contribute to her family…but most importantly to God. What could a simple Jewish girl from Nazareth really do in this world, she thought as a flutter of wings resonated through the thin walls of her small home. For my husband…my children…my community…this world…how can God use me?
“Mary,” a soft voice said from the corner of her room. “My name is Gabriel….”

“…God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.
…Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
